NOW THIS IS A TOPIC I CAN TALK ABOUT
NOTE: Other Batchildren may be mentioned (not everyone was a Robin)
ALSO: slightly more than basic info here, I can get a bit carried away
I’ll start from the beginning
DICK GRAYSON - ROBIN I, NIGHTWING, BATMAN II
We have Richard “Dick” Grayson, raised as an acrobat in Haly’s Circus by his mom and dad, Mary and John Grayson. But when he was 9 (I believe he was 15/16 in N52?) his parents were murdered by a mob boss, Tony Zucco, when he sabotaged their lines during their final performance, all of which is pretty much the same. Bruce was in the audience that night, and took Dick in, seeing himself in him, and wanting Dick to get justice for his parents’ murder. Yadda, yadda, yadda, it’s all about the same. A slight difference is that Dick didn’t have the ability to read people the way he can in the N52 (this skill was stolen from another character who does not exist in this universe)
The Court of Owls was not a thing. He never had any assassins in his past, no long-lost ties to Gotham, just happened to become an orphan in Batman’s city, lucky him.
Dick Grayson is a very happy person (he’s darker and not nearly as fun as he should be in the N52, at least in his own series). He was the first sidekick ever, and shortly others appeared (Speedy, Kid Flash, Aqualad, Wonder Girl…don’t even get me started on these guys, half of them don’t exist). Eventually, Dick and the other sidekicks formed their own team, the Teen Titans, and he lead them. He has lost of friends, easily one of the most the most well-connected and loved heroes in the hero community. He and Barbara have always had something between them, but it never really worked out for them. Barbara was a few years older than him, more mature among other things. More on Babs later.
Anyway, in his later teens, Dick and Bruce got in a tiff, and he was fired/quit, and struck out on his own, leaving the Titans and becoming Nightwing. Worked in Bludhaven, a nasty sister city to Gotham that is actually even more corrupted and violent, became a cop (Officer Grayson goddamn), and went through tons of character development and tragedy their.
When Bruce “died”, Dick took up the mantle as Batman, and made Damian his Robin. They were fantastic. Bruce came back, created Batman, Inc, and Dick stayed as Gotham’s Batman for a while, while Bruce travelled around the world for some reason or another who really knows. Eventually, Bruce returned to Gotham and Dick went back to being Nightwing, which was sad because he and Damian are awesome, and in my opinion, as good, if not better, than Bruce and any of his Robins.
JASON TODD - ROBIN II, RED HOOD
Jason Todd grew up in Crime Alley. he was raised by his mother, Catherine, who died around the time he was 9/10 of a drug overdose. His dad worked for Two-Face, and his body was eventually found in some river somewhere, or something like that. So he was on his own for a few years before running into Batman. He caught Batman’s eye for stealing 3 tires off of the Batmobile. Yeah, ballsy kid. Bruce saw potential in him, and even more importantly, believed that he could turn his life around by taking him in, saving him from a life of crime and an early grave (if only).
Jason was Robin for a few years. He had a little interaction with the Titans, but didn’t fit in too well. He became increasingly violent as he grew older, fueled by rage. He and Bruce fought a lot. Then one day he found out that Catherine hadn’t been his real mom. So he tracked down his birth mother, travelling all the way to Ethiopia. His mom was some doctor there. Bruce followed Jason, and was sad, but happy for Jason, good for you you have a mom. But. Joker happened to be in town, and to save her own skin, Jason’s mom sold Jason out as Robin to the Joker. After beating Jason black and blue with a crowbar, he blew up the warehouse he and his mom her trapped in. Jason used his final moments to try to protect his mom, shielding her from the blast as best he could. Such a sweet kid, really.
Now, his resurrection. There are two versions, but I’ll explain the less complicated and confusing one. Ra’s al Ghul stole Jason’s body and resurrected him (well, more Talia than Ra’s) using a Lazarus Pit (this is a huge simplification). After that, Talia trained him for a while, basically turning Jason against Bruce in the process. When Jason learned that the Joker was still alive, he became furious. Being replaced by a third Robin didn’t help much, either.
So he became the Red Hood (which was the Joker’s first alias, before he became his twisted psychopathic self) and attacked Gotham, and for years beat up and tried to kill other members of the Batfam, like Dick and Damian, but especially Tim. Ah, good times.
Jason is the only person the N52 did any justice to. Jason was mostly a criminal in the preboot, rarely fighting with his family, mostly against it. He’s more sane now (and his Red Hood suit a 10000000000000x better, he wasn’t always in a cool-looking helmet and leather jacket), and I like him working with family.
TIM DRAKE - ROBIN III (HE WAS A ROBIN, ARGUABLY THE BEST), RED ROBIN
Ok, everything you know about Tim is a LIE. He’s pretty much the opposite of the asshole that leads the Teen Titans in the N52.
Timothy Jackson Drake, son of Jack and Janet Drake of Drake Industries. Tim grew up the neighbor of Bruce Wayne. His parents ran a company, not as wealthy as WE, but he grew up in the same world as Bruce. But Tim had a lonely childhood with neglectful parents who travelled a lot for business and archeological digs (I think that was just a hobbie of theirs). So Tim had a lot of free time. He was a fanboy (think Harper Row), to put it simply. He was also there the night Dick’s parents fell, and had been a huge fan of their act. He was also a fan of Batman and Robin. He would follow them and take pictures of them (stalker-ish, but it’s more endearing than creepy, trust me). By the age of 9, he had put it together that Dick Grayson was Robin, and therefore Batman was Bruce Wayne. He kept that secret for years.
When Jason died, Batman become extremely violent, and Tim knew he would either kill someone in his rage, or get himself killed. So, long story short, Tim approaches Bruce and tells him that him that Batman needs a Robin, and if no one else were available, he’d do it Bruce told him no, obviously, but later on Tim proved his worth and Bruce trained him. He didn’t have any athletic background (olympic gymnastics hopeful, oh please), he was just an average kid at the beginning, so he travelled around the world for a while and trained with many people, including an assassin, Lady Shiva.
Shortly after he became Robin, Tim’s parents were kidnapped and poisoned. His mom died, his dad went into a coma and was paralyzed from the waist down. He eventually woke up, regained the use of his legs, and lost his company, but tried to be a better parent to Tim.
So he and Bruce were a great team, and Tim shared his greatness with kids his own age, and formed the second generation of the Teen Titans (they originally went by a different name but w.e); Wonder Girl (II) (they have damaged Cassie so much it’s ridiculous), Superboy, Kid Flash (Impulse at the time) (no Bunker, Solstice, or um…Skitter??? They had other members). So Tim had lots of friends, and overall, was a very accomplished hero.
But his life got really shitty all at once. His dad and girlfriend both died in some Gotham crisis, and a few months later, his best friends, Superboy, died too (plus Kid Flash a few months after that). So Tim became a darker character, and very Bruce-like, rather than the dorky, role-model teen he once was. When Bruce “died”, and Dick made Damian Robin, he snapped, in a sense. He went travelling again, taking up the mantle of Red Robin (a pre-existing alias with a spotty history). He got involved in a lot of shit, did questionable things, lost his spleen, lead and took down the League of Assassins, and ultimately making him Ra’s al Ghul’s new favorite play thing.
But his life got better when his gf, and both his best friends came back to life (gf actually faked her death, super complicated).
Also, Tim and Dick were really close, Tim and Jason were not, and Tim and Damian’s relationship was as dysfunctional then as it was in the N52.
DAMIAN WAYNE - ROBIN V (I’LL COME BACK TO IV)
You pretty much know all there is to know about Damian. Biological son of Bruce Wayne and Talia al Ghul. Raised by the League of Assassins. Met his father when he was 10, tried to kill Tim as soon as they met, considering him a rival.
Oh, but there was something else. Ra’s al Ghul was dying, more so than usual, and needed a new body. He intended to use Damian’s. So he attacked the manor with ninja and kidnapped Damian and Tim. Dick and Talia, yes Talia, worked together to rescue the two. After an ethical-struggle with Tim dealing with his grief of loved ones, Damian was rescued and Ra’s “died”, but not really because he’s Ra’s al Ghul.
All of Damian’s time as Bruce’s partner were in the N52. He never died in the preboot.
BARBARA GORDON - BATGIRL I, ORACLE
Barbara is the daughter of Police Commissioner James Gordon. She grew up in Gotham with just her dad (I think her parents were just divorced). Her best friend was Dick Grayson growing up.
She became Batgirl simply because she wanted to. No tragedy in her past put her on the road to crime-fighting, just the sense of justice and need to make a difference. She would have been a cop, but her dad forbade it. But she wanted to protect him, and being trained in martial arts, as well as a gymnast since she was a kid gave, and as her photographic memory meant she was more than qualified to become Gotham’s third vigilante. Eventually, she was let in on the secret and was trained by Bruce himself.
Eventually, Barbara retired. But the Joker targeted her father, and used her to get to him, invading their home and shooting her, shattering her spine and paralyzing her. After that, she became Oracle, one of the best hackers in the world, and Batman’s cybernetic eyes and ears. She ran Gotham’s operations, and a team of heroines known as the Birds of Prey.
Only in the N52 did she ever take up the mantle of Batgirl again.
CASSANDRA CAIN - BATGIRL II, BLACK BAT
Cass, much like Damian, was raised by assassins. Bother of her parents were assassins, her mother Lady Shiva, her father an assassin by the name of David Cain. David raised her to be the perfect assassin, conditioned not to speak, and to read the body language of others (a skill later given to Dick, as mentioned earlier). Eventually (I’m not so clear how), she met Batman and the others, and realized she didn’t want to kill anyone, and joined in Bruce’s crusade, eventually later adopted by Bruce.
At some point, Cass went through a dark time, being drugged, brainwashed, and recruited into an anti-Titans of sorts, meant to wipe out Tim’s team of Titans. Afterward, she was traumatized and ashamed, and worked hard to regain the trust of her family.
When Bruce “died”, she was instructed to drop the title of Batgirl for Stephanie (not sure why). Later, with Tim’s encouragement, she became Black Bat, and continued crime-fighting in Hong Kong.
Cass was very close to Tim and Stephanie (as I’ll get to soon).
STEPHANIE BROWN - SPOILER, ROBIN IV, BATGIRL III
Stephanie Brown was the daughter of a minor villain known as Cluemaster. She often thwarted her father’s plans, going by The Spoiler (clever, huh?). She and Tim eventually dated (cutest relationship ever, OTP). Stephanie was often told to give up crime-fighting as it would be better for her, by Bruce, and even Tim, but she kept fighting and made a place for herself in the superhero community.
When Tim’s dad found out that he was Robin, Tim was forced to quit for a while. Stephanie pushed and pushed, and eventually Bruce decided to train her to be Robin. But she was only Robin for a few months, before Batman fired her for disobeying orders. Shortly afterwards, during a crisis in Gotham, she was captured by Black Mask and tortured for information, beating her to “death”, when in actuality, Leslie Tompkins, a doctor and old friend of Bruce’s, smuggled for off to Africa with her to give her a fresh start. But Stephanie didn’t want that, and trained around for a while before returning to Gotham.
Stephanie became Batgirl III after Bruce “died” and Cass gave her the mantle, and operated throughout Gotham under the tutelage of Barbara Gordon, Oracle. She also became a significant figure in Damian’s life, and aside from Dick, probably his favorite person to be around.
That just about wraps up the canon (I won’t go dipping into alternate universes right now) batchildren. This is much more than you wanted, oops my bad I go a bit overboard, I am simply impassioned.
